Position Summary
The Center for Public Engagement with Science (CPES) in the UNC Institute for the Environment (UNC-IE) seeks a project coordinator to begin in May 2023. The CPES partners with UNC faculty/staff/students and non-academic partners to translate environmental science research results into action in North Carolina (NC) communities. This full-time position will support project coordination and youth climate education for an NSF-funded program, Youth Engaging in the Science of Resilience: Sensing the Environment & Envisioning Solutions (YES Resilience: SEE Solutions). In this project, CPES collaborates with the NC Museum of Natural Sciences, the Juntos NC Program, and the University of Washington (in Seattle, WA) to engage diverse high school aged youth in resilience-focused informal science learning.

This position will coordinate activity across program sites in NC and WA to facilitate collaboration and will support diverse youth in the local area in learning about climate hazards in their communities and taking action to increase resilience. The project coordinator will manage day-to-day aspects of the YES Resilience: SEE Solutions program across the three project locations, including: training of partner organization staff, providing guidance to project partners on facilitating youth action projects, planning an annual Partnership Summit, and overall program logistics. This person also will manage program activities for youth during the Teen Climate Ambassador Summer Institute at the NC Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh, NC. While primary responsibilities are with the YES Resilience: SEE Solutions program, this position also will support other youth and teacher programming led by CPES.

The position is housed within UNC-IE, which has a three-part mission: (1) to strengthen environmental research capacity across UNC by supporting a multi-disciplinary community of scholars that enhances collaboration, increases sharing of knowledge, and identifies solutions to the world’s critical environmental problems, (2) to work in partnership across UNC and with external partners to coordinate and deliver 21st century educational programs that provide students with the experience and skills to thrive in a growing global economy, and (3) to put new environmental knowledge into action by engaging and serving communities, here in North Carolina and around the world.
