Job Description
The Department of Nutrition within the College of Agriculture, Biotechnology and Natural Resources at the University of Nevada, Reno, seeks to fill a tenure-track Nutrition Specialist position at the Assistant Professor level. This full-time faculty position requires off-campus Extension teaching (50%), research (40%), and service (10%) and is a year-round (12-month) appointment supported by Extension and the Nevada Agricultural Experiment Station. The position is located in Southern Nevada (at the Clark County Extension Office in Las Vegas, NV). Travel throughout the state and collaboration with others are expected and commensurate with statewide responsibilities.
Programmatic Emphases
The Nutrition Specialist will develop and implement evidence-based interventions that promote the nutritional health of school-age children and adolescents, focusing on reducing health disparities that may result from diet, food insecurity, and other social determinants of health. Scholarly and research efforts may include, but are not limited to, the development of novel approaches that result in measurable impact; studies of risk behaviors and their correlates; and the roles and perspectives of the broader community (e.g., parents, guardians, teachers, health care providers) in regards to improving children’s nutritional health. Teaching and research are expected to positively impact the residents of Clark County, NV, and beyond.
Responsibilities
The Specialist will effectively integrate community-based Extension teaching and programming, applied research, and professional/community service efforts to improve nutritional health and reduce health disparities among Nevadans.
In general, it is expected that successful specialists will:
1) Lead impactful nutrition programs that address critical needs by utilizing policies, systems, environmental approaches, and direct education.
2) Develop culturally responsive approaches to program content and delivery for diverse audiences, including under-represented and under-served populations.
3) Establish a nationally recognized research program that informs nutrition programs and policies by securing extramural funding and publishing in appropriate refereed journals.
4) Participate and contribute to the Extension Nutrition Team in developing curriculum and intervention/strategies and inform the evaluation of programs, including those that are federally funded (e.g., SNAP-Ed and EFNEP).
5) Mentor/supervise graduate student research.
6) Cultivate impactful collaborations with others, including those within the Nevada System of Higher Education and other NGO and public agencies.
7) Foster the success of a vibrant and inclusive academic community through collegiality, cooperation, and collaboration.
Required Qualifications
A doctoral degree in nutrition, public health nutrition, or closely related discipline; and experience developing, implementing, and/or evaluating community-based nutrition programs.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Registered Dietitian Nutritionist
  • Prior experience in Extension and community-based programming
  • Record of successful independent and collaborative scholarly activities, including peer-reviewed publications and funding
  • Work experience in an interdisciplinary environment
  • Demonstrated ability to work with diverse audiences
  • Evidence of leadership
  • Prior success in engaging the public, stakeholders, and other community groups
Licensure
A valid Class “C” driver’s license or higher operator’s license within 30 days of appointment.
Compensation
The typical salary range for this position is $66,015 - $83,806. Salary is based on related education, experience, internal equity, and budgets.
