What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Technical Project Manager 3/Technical Project Manager 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

Be part of a winning team of like-minded individuals at the Los Alamos National Laboratory to help solve national security challenges through scientific excellence. As a Technical Project Manager, you will report directly to the PT division group leader and will provide leadership to a diverse set of programmatic activities encompassing manufacturing and surveillance programs. You will be responsible for supporting the maintenance of a programmatic portfolio including: definition and establishment of project deliverables with the Program Manager, definition of project technical requirements, the status of deliverables, and interface with technical and support organizations. As a TPM you will be the primary interface between program and line management for a particular programmatic area. You will establish milestones based on customer technical requirements and also help develop work packages with input from programmatic and line organizations.

Technical Project Manager 3 ($119,200 - $201,100)

As a Technical Project Manager 3, you will ensure that project objectives meet the customer's scope requirements and are safely fulfilled within cost and schedule constraints. The Technical Project Manager 3 will be responsible and accountable for project success and will be responsible for reporting project status to the Group Leader. The TPM will be expected to identify risks associated with project execution and manage those risks to best meet the needs of the customers and the Laboratory's overall mission requirements.

Technical Project Manager 4 ($143,100 - $248,200)

In addition to the duties outlined above, the Technical Project Manager 4 will be required to: Assume responsibility and accountability for project success from cradle to grave and report project status to upper-level management regularly. The TPM 4 will be expected to identify risks associated with project execution on complex projects and manage those risks to best meet the needs of the customers and the Laboratory's overall mission requirements.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Project Management: Advanced knowledge in defining work scope based on requirements, preparing schedules with milestones, budget preparation, priority assessment, risk management, schedule status updating, and managing change control for baseline schedules. Advanced experience in formulating and presenting results and project information to technical and programmatic customers. Proven ability to identify potential project and/or technical risks, develop mitigation strategies, and recovery plans.

Risk Management: Demonstrated advanced ability to independently identify and judge potential project risks, developing risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and recommending risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of the project.

Technical Communication: A demonstrated record of written technical communication that can include reports to external customers, documents that have been published in peer-reviewed journals, procedure development, or research analysis.

Education/Experience at Technical Project Manager 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Project Management Institute certification is desired for this level.

Additional Job Requirements for Technical Project Manager 4

Project Management: Expert level knowledge in defining work scope based on requirements, preparing schedules with milestones, budget preparation, priority assessment, risk management, schedule status updating, and managing change control for baseline schedules. Expert level experience in formulating and presenting results and project information to technical and programmatic customers. Proven ability to identify potential project and/or technical risks, develop mitigation strategies, and recovery plans.

Risk Management: Demonstrated expert level ability to independently identify and judge potential project risks, developing risk mitigation strategies and corrective actions, and recommending risk acceptance/avoidance for all aspects of the project.

Education/Experience at Technical Project Manager 3: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 8 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Project Management Institute certification is desired for this level.

Education/Experience at Technical Project Manager 4: Position requires a Bachelor's Degree from an accredited institution and 12 years of related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation. A Project Management Institute certification is desired for this level.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of the requirements included in the Defense Programs Business Process System to perform Defense Programs nuclear weapons work scopes and / or the Phase 6.X process.
  • Demonstrated quality assurance and / or quality control knowledge based on requirements from LANL, Department of Energy, or other relevant quality systems.
  • Experience working in a high-hazard nuclear or explosives facilities.
  • Experience utilizing the Earned Value Management System to report on project performance.
  • Advanced knowledge of regulatory and Laboratory requirements related to programmatic work, or to typical manufacturing processes.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of quality assurance requirements including but not limited to NAP-24A or NQA-1.

Training/Certifications: A Project Management Institute Certification is preferred.

Location: This position will be located in Los Alamos, NM.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Applicants selected will be subject to a Federal background investigation and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance which requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon position, additional authorization to access nuclear weapons information may be required that may or may not be available to dual citizens depending upon the circumstances.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

HRP: This position is subject to the requirements of the DOE Human Reliability Program as specified in 10 Code of Federal Regulation, Part 712, §712.11. These requirements include on going drug and alcohol testing, as well as periodic medical and psychological evaluations.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
