Position Summary

The Genome Technology Access Center at the McDonnell Genome Institute (GTAC@MGI) was formed in 2019 and represents a union of the institution’s two major genomics research facilities. GTAC@MGI provides access in a fee-for-service mode to all its genomics technologies and services to researchers at Washington University and beyond.

This position is in our clinical next-gen sequencing laboratory. This position assists with the technical aspects of clinical testing including documentation and preparation of materials. The laboratory is responsible for the preparation of DNA for sequencing through the operation of the sequencer. We currently use the Illumina NovaSeq.

This position independently performs complex research studies, experiments and assays.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

• Performs complex analysis/projects according to research protocols, explaining methods and procedures to other technicians.
• Provides for data entry and current data files on research projects. Monitors data to ensure consistent quality.
• May perform preliminary statistical analysis of data.
• Assures compliance with established safety procedures and maintains required documentation on laboratory and specimen conditions.
• Ensures lab conditions and equipment are properly cleaned and maintained in accordance with established procedures.
• Assists in the training and development of technicians, acting as a group leader.

Schedule/Working Conditions

This position is required to cover at least one weekend day per week, preferably Saturday. Depending on the need of the department and the individual's performance level, you may have the option to work four 10-hour days per week, ideally Wednesday - Saturday. The 8-hr or 10-hr shift will take place between 10am and 10pm.

This position works in laboratory environment with potential exposure to biological, chemical and radioactive hazards. The individual must be physically able to wear protective equipment and to provide standard care to research animals.

Preferred Qualifications

• Demonstrated ability to work independently and communicate with laboratory staff and investigators.
• Ability to maintain complete and organized records/reports.
• Working knowledge of computer software and general lab equipment.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree with two years of experience in a laboratory setting or an equivalent combination of education and experience equaling seven years.

Salary Range

$17.86 - $30.39 / Hourly

The salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
