Registered Nurse / RN OR Tallgrass Surgical Center

Schedule: PRN. Day shift. Hours variable
NO CALL, NO Holidays, NO weekends
Location: Tallgrass Surgical Center
Position Summary

The Circulating Nurse is responsible for coordinating and managing the multidisciplinary activities required to provide a safe environment for patients undergoing surgical intervention. Assess patient’s physical and psychological needs. Evaluate and implement appropriate measures to assure a safe recovery from anesthesia. The OR nurse serves as a patient advocate in the provision of care and is responsible for ensuring patient safety during intra-operative period and with recovery from anesthesia during immediate post op period and with transport to PACU.

General Expectations

General
  • Participate in appropriate educational programs relating to clinical practice and/or communication and continuing education required to maintain necessary licensures and certifications.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient and Center matters.
  • Comply with all Center policies and procdures, code of conduct and compliance program.
  • Attend Center meetings as applicable.
  • Participate in quarterly fire and disaster drills.
  • Assume the responsibility for assurance of patient safety during the period of enforced dependency created intra-operatively.
  • Demonstrate an understanding and interpretation of diagnostic tests, labs, EKGs, x-rays, etc. Initiate action as needed in accordance with standards of practice subject to the nurse’s scope of practice.
  • Demonstrate skill in the management of emergency situations.
  • Evaluate results of actions taken and modify plan of care accordingly.
  • Create a professional and caring environment for patient by assuring a safe and clean environment for all patients and visitors in preoperative area.
  • Have needed equipment and supplies available.
  • Report to appropriate personnel any equipment failures, breaks in technique, incidents or other unusual event.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Clinical
  • Serve as patient advocate during the intraoperative period.
  • Provide a channel for communication between events and team members in the operating room and persons who may not be in the immediate operating area, but who are concerned with the patient’s operative status.
  • Oversee the preparation of OR for surgical procedure.
  • Check function of lights, suction, and all mechanical equipment.
  • Assist OR Technician with the opening of supplies.
  • Obtain anesthesia supplies as requested.
  • Perform and document needle and sponge counts preoperatively, intra-operatively, and postoperatively with the Scrub Tech.
  • Transport patient from preoperative area to OR. Identify patient by reading identification bracelet. Compare signed consent to the scheduled procedure and confirm with patient. If there are any discrepancies, contact surgeon immediately.
  • Assist patient to OR table. Secure patient safety strap.
  • Assist with induction of anesthesia as requested.
  • Position patient per surgeon preference card assuring natural body alignment and protection in such a manner as to prevent nerve damage.
  • Perform skin prep per surgeon preference card.
  • Perform time-out per Center policy.
  • Anticipate the needs of the surgical team and provide additional supplies and equipment as needed.
  • Assist with the application of dressings and casts.
  • Verify with surgeon, disposition of specimen following Center policy.
  • Assist anesthesia with the care of the patient during the arousal from anesthesia as requested.
  • Assist with the transfer of the patient from the OR table to gurney.
  • Accompany patient to PACU.
  • Give accurate report of patient’s surgical intervention to the PACU nurse. Include any physical or psychological needs of the patient.

Infection Control
  • Minimize risk of nosocomial infection by adhering to infection control policies and practice guidelines.
  • Clean gurney per Center policy following each patient and prepare equipment for next patient.
  • Clean all surfaces and equipment daily. Handle linen and trash in accordance with facility policy.
  • At end of daily schedule, direct or perform terminal cleaning activities. Restock supplies and medications.

Physical Requirements:
  • Ability to move and lift 40 pounds without assistance and obtain assistance as needed.
  • Listen to and understand operating room personnel while wearing routine operating room attire, i.e. masks.
  • Reading and reviewing handwritten notation and directives.
  • Positioning patients, transporting patients by cart or wheelchair, and lifting, moving or transporting supplies, instruments and equipment.
  • Perceptive acuity to perform all direct and indirect patient care functions.

Non-Essential Job Functions:
  • Place patient’s personal belongings in locker and give valuables to family member.
  • Monitor and document the completeness of the emergency cart daily.
  • Call family members to sit with patient prior to surgery and explain to family the recovery and discharge routine.
  • Assist patients with physical activities, like dressing, walking, and use of restroom.
  • Obtain assistance with tasks or guidance as needed.
  • Advise patient they will receive a follow up phone call the following day.
  • Troubleshoot equipment failures, correcting when possible, and report to appropriate personnel any equipment failures.
  • Complete top portion of the telephone follow-up record and place in the next day phone-call file.
  • Minimize supply waste. Hold supplies in question as needed.
  • Clean all instruments and equipment in accordance with recognized standards of practice.
  • Assemble instrument sets accurately.
  • Wrap instrument sets accurately.
  • Load sterilizer according to Center policy.
  • Be familiar with the operation of all sterilization equipment and follow manufacturer guidelines or instructions for use.
  • Ensure proper documentation of all instrument processing as required by state and federal regulations.

Qualifications:
Qualifications:

  • Graduate of an accredited school of professional nursing;
  • Current Nursing License in the State of Kansas;
  • Current BLS certification;
  • Current ACLS, PALS certifications; required within first 30 days
  • Has a working knowledge of surgical and aseptic technique;
  • Two years of experience preferred.
