Function Statement:

The Ohio State University Office of Diversity and Inclusion Young Scholars Program improves pre-college preparation, retention, and degree completion among high-ability academically gifted first-generation students with financial need from nine of the largest urban school districts in Ohio: Akron Public, Canton City, Cincinnati Public, Cleveland Metropolitan, Columbus City, Dayton Public, Lorain City, Toledo Public, and Youngstown City. YSP supports scholar's 8th grade through the completion of a bachelor's degree. Our goals are to recruit, prepare and support scholars to successfully gain admission to and graduate from The Ohio State University.

The Program Coordinator – Toledo is a full-time position LOCATED IN TOLEDO, OHIO. The successful candidate must reside or be willing to relocate to or live within daily commuting distance of Toledo, OH.

Detailed Job Description:

Engagement

Student/Family

  • Educate YSP students and their families about colleges, the college admissions process, trends, procedures, and testing requirements;
  • Meet a minimum of twice per month with each YSP student in grades 8-12 enrolled in Toledo Public and Toledo Area Schools through the individual, group, and/or classroom or virtual advisement process;
  • Build and maintain a supportive relationship with each YSP student starting high school through their college graduation;
  • Develop individualized comprehensive academic plans aligned with Ohio State admissions standards;
  • Assist YSP students with selecting courses consistent with their comprehensive academic plan;
  • Identify and provide resources, referrals, and support services in respective cities for scholars and families.
  • Represent and negotiate on behalf of the YSP student and the parent in the event problems or disputes arise in the areas of academic standing, probation or expulsion, etc.;

District/Community

  • Collaborate and network with local area universities and college access programs

Curriculum

  • Research, develop, and facilitate monthly cohort college and career readiness workshop curriculum for assigned grade level

Programs and Services

  • Assist with developing and implementing programs and events consistent with program initiatives
  • Develop and facilitate events, field trips, award ceremonies and providing support for special initiatives and events designed at targeted site and at The Ohio State University;
  • Work with campus and off-campus stakeholders to offer special programming outside school setting and hours;

Administrative Duties

Scholars and Families

  • Maintain detailed notes of action steps for each monthly individual, group and/or classroom meeting;
  • Track, monitor, and evaluate the academic progress (e.g., course selections, grades, school attendance, etc.) and school attendance of each YSP student by reviewing mid-term and semester grades, prescribing appropriate remedial action (if necessary) and working with appropriate school counselors and/or teachers to ensure good academic standing;
  • Maintain strong filing and record keeping system for each YSP student;
  • Provide consistent communication with participating scholars and parents via email, phone and or postal mail

Recruitment/Admissions

  • Develop and implement strategic recruitment and marketing plan for high academic performing underrepresented first-generation college-bound students to prepare them for post-secondary education
  • Coordinate middle school classroom visits, assemblies, and club meetings to promote YSP, college awareness, and college preparation;
  • Participate in in-person and virtual district and statewide information sessions for YSP pre-college admission
  • Select, recruit and train committee members in yearly YSP recruitment selection processes;
  • Serve as a liaison with School Administrators and Ohio State University for recruitment and retention and college admission process of students within school district;

District

  • Form professional relationships with a wide range of stakeholders including parents, students, and school district personnel
  • Maintain familiarity with opportunities and resources that could advance the Young Scholars Program in the YSP serving school district and local community
  • May volunteer with YSP serving district as a college access and student success partner

Student supervision

  • Hire, train, and supervise remote work study student assistants to provide valuable work experience and soft skills development.

Technology

  • Learn, and utilize technology: Carmen Zoom, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Jamboard, Scarlet Canvas, CANVA, Embark application site, and Skype for Business
  • Manage social media site(s) (Facebook/Meta, Instagram) for YSP serving city to support program updates, scholar acknowledgement, and recruitment

Budgetary

  • Manage budget and spending for city programming

Professional

  • Assists with writing and submitting proposals to funding agencies, and national, state, and district conferences
  • Assist with collecting and interpreting key progress and outcome variables to evaluate the effectiveness of the Young Scholars Program and services in the YSP serving school district;
  • Represent YSP, as requested by the YSP director and/or senior ODI administration, to potential supporters and other interested parties at targeted school district
  • Attend all mandatory meetings and recommended professional development opportunities;
  • Work closely with YSP leadership to identify vendors, process paperwork, and connect with prospective stakeholders.

Additional Information

Travel

Successful candidates must commit to traveling within the YSP serving city to school buildings and other locations to conduct workshops, meet with students, and conduct recruitment sessions. The Successful candidate must also commit to traveling to The Ohio State University – Columbus campus as necessary for staff meetings, campus visits, and summer programming including overnight travel lasting upwards of one week.

Bachelor's Level Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Additional Education Desired

Master's Degree or equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Qualifications

Minimum 3 to 5 years direct work experience with low-income and urban students at the secondary and/or post-secondary level; demonstrative outcomes working with low-income, urban students for college success; knowledge of practices working with urban, low-income students; excellent interpersonal, written, verbal, public speaking and presentation skills; knowledge of issues and trends in preK-12 urban & higher education; commitment to professional growth; ability to work independently without daily oversight; strong collaborative work style, strong work ethic; computer and tech skills; excellent organizational skills and ability to identify strategic processes.

The target hiring range for this job profile is $22.16 - $29.54 The actual salary paid to an individual will vary based on multiple factors, including but not limit to, education, years of experience, internal equity, etc.
