Production Engineer- Dover OH
The Production Engineer is responsible for supporting day-to-day operations in the facility. He / she plays a key role in ensuring that quality products are manufactured safely, in an environmentally sound manner, efficiently, and on time The Production Engineering role acts as a technical resource for Operations personnel, applying technical skills to optimize plant operations, resolves plant problems and enable production of low cost, quality products.
The responsibility of the position is to ensure that products are produced at the rate needed to meet customer demand while maintaining quality and safety standards. The position plays a vital role in the organization, liaising across various functions to deliver designs equipped for manufacture and providing solutions (troubleshooting) to the problems concerning the design and manufacturing process (optimization).
The Production Engineer provides technical support for an operating area helping to improve asset capability and production output. The Production Engineer works closely with Maintenance personnel on mechanical improvements and Engineers on the implementation of various capital projects and process control improvements.

The Production Engineer reports directly to the Production Manager. This is a dual role providing a technical resource to assist with daily operations and process improvements so as to run a low cost, on specification, reliable, optimized operation, while also providing project and process engineering expertise towards the design and implementation of various projects for the area.
The Production Engineer is tasked with the responsibility of ensuring that products manufactured in his/her assigned plant is manufactured with utmost efficiency and quality, according to planned protocols using the appropriate technology. The Production Engineer’s supervisory duties involve training the team of workers on safety and quality assurance protocols used in the manufacturing process. The Production Engineer will occasionally provide supervisory direction to the hourly workforce in the absence of the area production manager, usually due to vacations.
Administratively, the Production Engineer uses their planning time to develop new procedures and / or revise existing procedures for products / processes already in production or to be produced in the future and meet with other functions to discuss product / process / project development.
Internal contacts include: Director of Operations; Operations Manager; Maintenance Manager; Project, Process, Electrical and Controls Engineers; EH&S personnel; Operators, Maintenance and Instrumentation/Electrical skilled craft employees.
External contacts include: Contractors and Vendors.
The position requires an individual with strong analytical, technical and leadership skills; problem-solving and trouble-shooting skills, independent judgement skills, inter-personal and people management skills, values and practices team oriented philosophy in solving problems and fostering productive working relationships. Additionally, the Production Engineer must possess the ability to work effectively in a diverse team environment and communicate in non-technical terms to non-technical individuals.
The key challenges and responsibilities of the position:
- Plan and coordinate production engineering processes on daily basis to produce high quality products.
- Provide engineering support for production and maintenance activities to ensure maximum production.
- Evaluate current production activities and make recommendations for improvements.
- Investigate problems, analyze root causes and derive resolutions.
- Develop and execute projects to further plant operations.
- Troubleshooting all steps in the manufacturing process and seeking improvement in procedures whenever necessary.
JOB REQUIREMENTS: (State minimum education/training & experience required and indicate technical and/or managerial skills and knowledge required.)
Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering. Advanced degree a plus.
- 3-5+ years’ experience working in the Chemical industry or related petro-chemical industry is preferred.
- Strong working knowledge of chemical manufacturing systems and processes.
- Experience with process optimization techniques.
- Experience working in a PSM site.
- Experience working in a complex, fast-paced and diverse team environment.
Technical Knowledge
- Strong “troubleshooting / diagnostic” ability.
- Experience working in both batch and continuous operations.
- Experience in process automation and DCS (Distributed Control Systems).
- Knowledge of Federal / State EPA and OSHA standards, especially vital practices such as LOTO, CSE, etc.
- Working knowledge of Recognized and Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP) as well as common Engineering Codes and Standards in the chemical industry.
- PSM / PHA knowledge preferred.
- Six Sigma knowledge and training a plus.
- Knowledge of manufacturing concepts and the ability to grasp modern state-of-the-art technology quickly.
- Broad understanding of business issues, metrics, organizational linkages, and customer value.
- Demonstrated analytical and project management skills.
- Experience with Root Cause Analysis strongly preferred.
- Knowledge and use of continuous improvement techniques such as Lean, TPM (Total Productive Maintenance), Kaizen, and Six Sigma a plus.
- Experience using process modeling software (ChemCad, Aspen, Hysis).
- Experience using (CMMS) Computerized Maintenance Management System (e.g. Tabware).
- Proficient with ERP systems a plus.
Work Skills and Abilities
- Demonstrated capability to analyze and troubleshoot operational and equipment problems and provide reasonable and accurate recommendations and solutions.
- Must be able to effectively communicate both orally and in writing to individuals; ability to present complex situations in a concise manner.
- Must have ability to interact effectively with technical contacts, as well as hourly workforce.
- Good organizational, time management, verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
- Strong project management skills preferred.
- Must have good problem solving skills using Statistical Process Control (SPC) as a tool.
- Computer skills are a must with knowledge of MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook, and MS PowerPoint.
- Ability to build partnerships across and between functional groups and lead a project.
- Experience working in a Union environment is a plus. Proven experience and effectiveness managing a union hourly workforce is desired and preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
- Must be able to wear personal protective equipment.
- Must be able to respond to visual and audible alarms and paging.
- Must be able to work around hazardous chemicals and exposure to dust.
- Ability to regularly work in and be exposed to outside weather elements (i.e. rain, snow, cold, heat).
- Must be able to work day, afternoon and evening shifts, weekends, holidays and extra hours as scheduled and as needed.
- Must be able to be periodically “on-call” on designated weekends and holidays and available on-site during plant shutdowns / start-ups, plant commissioning and decommissioning activities, and other operational events, planned and unplanned when required.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts if required.
- Physical ability to regularly work around and on industrial equipment, including frequent climbing of stairs and ladders, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouch or squat, twist, stooping and standing.
- Must be able to work at high elevations when necessary and required.
- Frequent need to talk, hear, and use hands.
- Must be able to lift or move objects weighing up to 10 lbs. routinely and up to 50 lbs. occasionally.
