Job description

Postdoctoral Associate

Required Qualifications: (as evidenced by an attached resume)
Ph.D. (or foreign equivalent) in Synthetic Biology, Bioengineering, Biomedical Engineering, Genetic Engineering, or a closely related field in hand by August 2023. Strong experimental background and research experience in eukaryotic gene circuit design and cloning as well as eukaryotic genome modification and quantitative single-cell level characterization of eukaryotic cells.

Preferred Qualifications:
Expertise in one or more of these areas: Quantitative approaches to characterize cancer-related phenotypes such as mammalian cell invasiveness and motility by microfluidics, flow cytometry and microscopy. Familiarity and experience with multiple DNA- and RNA-targeting CRISPR/Cas systems as well as recombinase systems in human cells; synthetic biological design, cloning, and insertion of multi-gene circuits into specific loci in the human genome.

Brief Description of Duties:
Gábor Balázsi in the Laufer Center for Physical & Quantitative Biology and the Biomedical Engineering Department at Stony Brook University seeks a Postdoctoral Associate to work at the interface between cancer cell biology and eukaryotic synthetic biology, to discover and quantitatively characterize the phenotypic effects of synthetic gene circuit-imposed control on single cells and thereby cell populations. We are applying quantitative, single-cell methods of experimental synthetic/systems biology (microfluidics, microscopy and flow cytometry) and multiscale stochastic modeling to elucidate molecular mechanisms underlying population-level phenotypes relevant to cancer metastasis and drug resistance. We aim to quantitatively unravel the genotype-phenotype connection in a variety of scenarios and thereby develop innovative approaches to control single mammalian cells and cell populations. This project involves the use of multiple DNA- and RNA-targeting CRISPR/Cas systems as well as recombinase systems in human cells, quantitative approaches to measure phenotypes of single experimental biology such as microfluidics, microscopy, synthetic biological design and cloning, and flow cytometry.

Essential Duties:

  • Conduct experiments to develop genetic constructs, modify genomes and/or perform single-cell oriented measurements with stably modified eukaryotic cell lines. May need to write code and develop approaches associated with data collection and analysis.
  • Develop and apply computational and statistical approaches to interpret and fit the experimental data.
  • Write up manuscripts for publication in scientific journals and develop presentations. Utilize relevant scientific literature for data interpretation. May also assist in grant writing.
  • Other duties as assigned, which may include attending scientific conferences and meetings or some graduate teaching

Special Notes:
The Research Foundation of SUNY is a private educational corporation. Employment is subject to the Research Foundation policies and procedures, sponsor guidelines and the availability of funding. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
