GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF THE POSITION:

Provide quality school-based occupational therapy services, which includes but is not limited to assessment/evaluation, intervention/treatment, IEP planning and implementation, related documentation, and communication between teachers, instructional assistants, related service providers, and families.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS include the following. Performs some or all of the following tasks:

  • Knowledge of occupational therapy theories, models of practice, principles, and evidence based practice
  • Knowledge of human development throughout the life span
  • Ability to articulate the role of the occupational therapy in the evaluation, intervention planning, and intervention process
  • Ability to analyze tasks relative to areas of occupation, performance skills, activity demands, contexts, and student factors to implement the intervention plan
  • Ability to recognize occupational performance deficits in the areas of personal care, student role/interactive skills, processing skills, play, community integration, and written communication
  • Skill in gathering screening and evaluation data, completing checklists, histories, and interviews
  • Ability to select, adapt, and sequence relevant occupations and purposeful activities that support intervention goals
  • Skill in effective oral and written communication
  • Ability to maintain safe environments, equipment, and materials
  • Ability to prepare and maintain accurate records and progress notes
  • Willingness to be educated and trained for specific program implementation
  • Initiative, strong work ethic, and the ability to positively interact and collaborate in a team environment
  • Ability to complete thorough evaluation, including muscle tone, range of motion/mobility, orthopedic needs, movement analysis, perceptive/fine motor skills, sensory motor processing and functional activities of daily living.
  • Ability to educate and demonstrate (verbally or written) therapy techniques to parents that can be incorporated into the home
  • Ability to develop and implement IEPs to meet the individual needs of the child.
  • Ability to attend staff meetings, in-service training, and continuing education courses as appropriate or required.
  • Ability to assess and make recommendations regarding the use of adaptive equipment as needed and provide written justification.
  • Responsible for timely documentation of evaluation results, progress reports, discharge reports, daily notes, service tracker notes.
  • Ability to maintain professional clinical competency.
  • Other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university;
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should have the ability to use or learn to use e-mail and word processing.
  • Certificates as determined by the District including an Occupational Therapy degree.
  • Ability to make decisions for the care of the student in collaboration with school professionals and to use judgment in accomplishing tasks following overall protocols, policies and objectives
  • Working knowledge of current Oregon laws, policies, administrative rules, and model programs related to special education and school-based Occupational Therapy provision.
  • Demonstrated ability to speak and write articulately and communicate clearly, to compose and produce clear, coherent professional documents, and to deliver concise, succinct, professional presentations to various stakeholder groups.

OTHER QUALIFICATIONS: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities Required:

  • Successful completion and graduation from an accredited Occupational Therapy program recognized by NBCOT and completion of all fieldwork requirements
  • Certification as an occupational therapist by the National Board for Certification of Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
  • Current Oregon license as a certified occupational therapist.
  • Demonstration of an advanced understanding of strategies for students with autism, developmental delay, specific learning disabilities, and behavior disorders.
  • Ability to be a strong classroom support.
  • Ability to demonstrate strong skills in partnering with families.
  • Ability to demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse group of colleagues, parents, families, and community members.

EVALUATION:

Performance of this job will be evaluated annually in accordance with the provisions of the School Board’s policy on evaluation of administrative personnel. For contracted employees a written summary of job performance will be provided annually to the relevant agency.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Ability to perform the requirements of this job description and the assigned duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Within a typical workday, the employee may be required to perform any combination of the following:

  • In an eight-hour day, the employee may:
  • Stand/walk 4-6 hours
  • Sit 4-7 hours
  • Use voice 6-7 hours
  • Utilize computer 2-4 hours
  • The employee may on a daily basis:
  • Bend, kneel, squat, reach
  • Climb stairs
  • Use hands for repetitive motions, including single grasping, fine manipulation, and pushing/pulling a maximum of 20 pounds
  • Drive between District facilities for meetings
  • The employee may occasionally:
  • Lift items weighing up to 50 lbs.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee works with groups of staff, small groups of students, or on a one-on-one basis. The working conditions are that of a typical school building. Minimal travel between District buildings is required; occasional travel to area Districts or ESDs for meetings and conferences should be anticipated.
