Position Overview

This is technical work in the servicing, repairing, and operating of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating systems. Employees in this section are responsible for the efficient operation and mechanical maintenance of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating equipment in the County Courthouse. Employees consult with superiors, and contractors, and work from manufacturers' specifications and plans in installing new equipment or in replacing parts. Routine maintenance and repair are performed independently of specific instructions, but inspected later by a technical superior.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

(All duties listed may not be included in any one position nor does the list include all tasks found in a position of this class.)


  • Installs and maintains air conditioning, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Starts and operates compressor units.
  • Overhauls motors, cleans and adjusts temperature records, checks and repairs all pumps, conducts all water treatment daily; calibrates pressure gauges, meters, and similar devices.
  • Checks all indicating instruments periodically to know the functioning level of each unit.
  • Repairs units by replacing defective breaker control thermostats, switches, fuses, and electrical wiring using electrician's hand tools and test equipment.
  • Services and repairs forced-air heating systems in combination with air conditioning systems.
  • Lubricates fans, motors, and control units; replace exhausted or defective containers or refrigerant with new refrigerant.
  • Performs related work as required.
  • Repairs, replaces and installs various types of plumbing fixtures, supply lines, and drainage systems.

Education, Experience, and Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a standard senior high school supplemented by college-level courses in mechanical or electrical engineering or vocational training courses in the operation and maintenance of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating systems.
  • Some experience in the operation and maintenance of a wide variety of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating equipment is required.
Knowledge, Skill, and Ability
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices applied to the safe and efficient operation of all types of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Working knowledge of and demonstrated skill in the maintenance and repair of air conditioning, heating, and ventilating equipment.
  • Ability to operate all types of ventilating equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans and drawings of machinery and mechanical equipment.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

Physical Requirements

  • Bend, stoop, climb a ladder on occasion, and lift up to 50 Lbs. Utilize hand tools to perform plumbing work, HVAC / Occasional Electrical/door, and lock work.

  • Universal Refrigerant Certification
