A. POSITION PURPOSE
This position maintains the accuracy and integrity of the library catalog records, performs customized cataloging for library materials, repairs damaged books, supervises student assistant(s), and may perform original cataloging.
B. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Database maintenance (60%)
Identifies and resolves discrepancies and errors in various record types in the library catalog, including bibliographic, item, order and check-in records
Works on catalog database maintenance projects as assigned, such as re-cataloging or reclassifying materials, changing locations or call numbers, or correcting and enhancing pre-existing records in the library catalog to ensure data integrity
Oversees and processes items for withdrawal or transfer, including but not limited to government documents
May load authority data and/or address data discrepancies identified when new data is loaded
Works on catalog data analytics and assessment projects as assigned
Cataloging (25%)
Performs copy cataloging of all monographic books, including rush and course reserve materials as well as government documents, gifts, and e-books
Analyzes, improves, and expands pre-existing bibliographic data in the bibliographic utility (OCLC) database to assure records adequately and accurately represent library materials in both the utility and catalog
Determines and edits access points to conform with local cataloging policies, classifies or reclassifies items as necessary.
Assures bibliographic records will be accessible through a variety of search techniques
Electronically transfers modified bibliographic records into the library catalog
Catalogs non-book formats according to existing skills, e.g., serials, video, audio, printed music, and cartographic formats
May create new bibliographic data to reflect library materials not already in the bibliographic utility
Creates brief bibliographic records locally as necessary
Performs physical processing of cataloged items
Student supervision and documentation (10%)
Trains student employee(s) for specific database maintenance projects
Supervises and trains student employee(s) in the physical sorting and transfer of physical items, including but not limited to government documents
Reviews student employee's work for quality assurance
Works with other Technical Services staff to assign additional tasks to student employees as needed by the department
Modifies existing procedures or develops new processes to enhance workflow efficiency
Maintains documentation of workflows and procedures relevant to database maintenance
Other duties as assigned (5%)

Multiple student employees working on disparate technical services tasks.
D. RECEIVES WORK DIRECTION FROM
Head of Cataloging
E. GENERAL GUIDELINES
Recommends initiatives and implements changes to improve quality and services.
Identifies and determines cause of problems; develops and presents recommendations for improvement of established processes and practices.
Creates documentation for all procedures related to the position and updates documentation as needed.
Maintains contact with (internal) customers and solicits feedback for improved services.
Maximizes productivity through use of appropriate tools; planned training and performance initiatives.
Prepares progress reports; informs supervisor of project status; and deviation from goals.
Ensures completeness, accuracy and timeliness of all operational functions.
Develops and implements guidelines to support the functions of the unit.

Demonstrated experience at workflow optimization
2. Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's Degree
At least one year of experience working in a library
