Job Summary
The Health Education Unit plays an integral role in meeting the University's commitment to health promotion. As part of the student health center, the Unit provides a wide variety of health education programs and services to UIUC students. It consists of health educators in the areas of fitness, nutrition, sexuality, cross-cultural health and stress management, under the direction of the Director of Health Education. The Health Educator - Dietician works closely with both clinical and non-clinical MHC staff as well as appropriate Student Affairs Units to provide vital services to UIUC students.DIRECT PATIENT CARE
- In consultation with Director of Health Education, recruit, train, teach and evaluate Graduate Assistants, Student Peers and actively assist with unit’s staff retreat and graduate student assistant training.
- Consult with MHC Mental Health Unit on the development of nutrition health materials including teaching and advising on dietary problems associated with mental health issues or concerns.
- Serve as a source for nutrition information for students, staff, and faculty.
- Provide individual/group teaching, instruction, and advice to students on matters related to nutrition, medical nutrition therapy, eating disorders and weight management.
- Refer students, when appropriate, to campus or community agencies, medical facilities, etc.
- Provide nutrition services and resources to students.
- Consult with and provide information to appropriate McKinley Health Center and/or University staff on matters related to the nutrition care of referred students, including medical record documentation.
- Teach, educate, and provide in-service training for McKinley staff in nutrition-related areas.
- Serve as a member of the Diabetes Team at MHC.
- Develop health education materials among health educators; including making revisions with appropriate unit/personnel and posting handouts/brochures to the World Wide Web.
- Serve as Liaison with McKinley Health Center units on health materials development and distribution.
- Maintain a working relationship with the ADA (American Dietetic Association) Dietetic Internship experience and Sports Nutrition Educator at McKinley Health Center/Sport Well Center.
- Serve on the Student Affairs EATING DISORDER Awareness Week Committee.
- If needed, serve as a member or chair of McKinley Health Center Eating Disorder Treatment Team.
ADMINISTRATION
- In consultation with director of health education, train, teach, direct, and supervise Graduate Assistant/s and other staff as assigned.
- In consultation with director of health education, determine budgetary needs for nutrition services and monitor expenditures.
- Develop annual goals and objectives consistent with the Unit/ McKinley Health Center goals and objectives and participate in Unit strategic planning process.
- Update and maintain, within the limits of the position, the Library/Information Center at the Health Resource Center.
- Assure self-care sites have appropriate resources.
- Conduct ongoing quality improvement activities as part of the Unit and McKinley Health Center QI program.
- Provide bi-weekly reports outlining significant activities and work in progress.
- Attend the unit staff meetings and monthly Student Affairs staff meetings.
- Serve on Health Education Unit, McKinley Health Center, Student Affairs, and University committees as requested.
- Contribute to professional growth and national recognition of health education Unit and McKinley Health Center by presenting at meetings and conferences, conducting scientific study and evaluation of Health Education programs and projects, and by writing and submitting articles to health-related newsletters, journals, and papers.
- Participate in continuing education programs and professional growth experiences.
- Inform the Director of Health Education of changes and/or new developments in the program area.
- Execute all university policies and procedures including those of the Health Education Unit, McKinley Health Center, and Student Affairs.
- Responsible and accountable to support and ensure a culture of safety, quality and risk management including compliance with ethics.
- Assume appropriate related additional duties to further the mission of the unit.
PROGRAMMING
- Plan and execute special events as well as collaborate with appropriate Campus Academic Unit, MHC Health Educators in assisting with academic class teaching requests.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate educational programs based on needs assessment including, but not limited to weight management, eating disorders, vegetarian diets, cholesterol and diabetes education. The formats for education include workshops, guest lectures, health screenings, written materials, and displays. Services are provided at McKinley Health Center in addition to other campus locations as appropriate.
- Develop or locate appropriate nutrition education materials as needed; update nutrition materials in the Health Resource Centers in collaboration with the Health Education Coordinator.
- Collaborate as needed with the Sports Nutrition Educator in providing peer- facilitated Nutrition Education workshops, guest lectures in appropriate classes and coordination of FSHN 229 peer education program.
- Coordinate campus-wide National Nutrition Month activities; collaborate with Health Education staff in planning and implementing other campus-wide health promotion activities.
- Execute special programs as requested by the Director of Health Education.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics.
- Illinois license or eligible in the State of Illinois or Registered Dietitian.
- Experience working with diverse student populations.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to organize workshops.
- Excellent computer skills and can plan and implement campus-wide events.
Appointment Information
This is a 100% full-time Academic Professional position, appointed on a 12-month basis. Salary is commensurate with experience.
