General Transportation Tech I:
Performs routine transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, contract maintenance, and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.
General Transportation Tech II:
Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, contract maintenance, and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
The essential duties for General Transportation Tech I and II include:
- Determines placement of traffic control devices and installls/moves devices.
- Move/picks up litter and roadway debris.
- Performs preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing and minor repairs on equipment and completes various required reports including time-keeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms and PMI.
- Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
The essential duties for General Transportation Tech II include:
- Maintains highways and rights-of-way; performs highly-skilled roadway repairs; erects and repairs guard rails, highway markers and signs; hauls materials and equipment to job sites.
- Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large gradall, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor and profiling/milling machine.
- Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper and dump truck.
- Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader-one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper and mower.
- Sands or cleans bridges and roads, posts warning signs, helps the public and performs other work as directed during emergency situations such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents and hazardous material spills.
Minimum Qualifications:
General Transportation Tech I: No experience or education required.
General Transportation Tech II: No education required
- 1 year in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
- Experience can be satisfied by fulltime or prorated parttime equivalent
- No supervisory experience required.
- Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis.
The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required General Transportation Tech I job:
- Safety Impact Certificate - will be provided by TxDOT
- Valid Regular Driver's License
- Must obtain CDL A with N endoresement within 120 days of hire
The following Licenses and/or Certifications are required General Transportation Tech II job:
- Safety Impact Certificate - will be provided by TxDOT
- Valid CDL type A required at time of application
Other Conditions:
- Both jobs are a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Commercial Driver’s License
The required competencies for General Transportation Tech I and II include:
- Communicate effectively
- Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance
- Maintenance concepts, methods, policies and requirements
- Using of light and heavy highway equipment
- Maintaining a safe working relationship
The required competencies for General Transportation Tech II include
- Basic vehicle mechanics, maintenance and repair procedures
- Applicable industry safety standards, guidelines and specification codes
- Prioritizing and organizing work assignments
- Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files and reports
- Using applicable hand and power tools, equipment and mechanical devices of the trade
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
- Subject to environmental conditions; protection from weather but not temperature changes
- Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour
- Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals
- Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device
- Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs
- Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine
- Standing-prolonged periods of time
- Walking-moving on foot to accomplish tasks: long distance/from one work site to another
- Talking-expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words
- Visual Acuity-determine work quality/make general observations of facilities/structures

- Must have a valid Regular Driver's License at time of application
- Must obtain CDL A with N Endorsement within 120 days of hire date (GTTI)
- Safety Impact certifications are not required at the time of application. As required, the Safety Impact certification will be issued by TxDOT at the time of hire.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. Safety impact employees will be subject to additional drug and alcohol testing during employment.
- Required to wear personal protective equipment provided by employer and comply with all safety requirements.
- Driver's record check will be conducted by the Department. Satisfactory driving records are required for driving state or personal vehicles and motor driven equipment to conduct agency business.
- Must attend work regularly and observe approved work hours.
- Required to work weekends and holidays.
- Required to work hours other than 8 to 5.
- Required to work under exposure to inclement weather conditions.
- This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
- Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions. This is a Safety Impact position and will be subject to random drug testing.
- Please note that the Department of Transportation's Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulation – 49 CFR Part 40, at 40.151(e) – does not authorize “medical marijuana” under a state law to be a valid medical explanation for a positive drug test result for an employee in this position.
- Must be able to report for duty within 1 hour of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
