The S.C. Law Enforcement Division is searching to fill a Forensic Technician I position in our Forensic Services - DNA Casework Department. The candidate must have a bachelor's degree, integrity, and a basic understanding of scientific principles involved in DNA analysis.

General Responsibility
With specified supervision, processes various forms of physical evidence for the collection of hair, fiber, and DNA evidence. Under general supervision may perform various duties associated with the operation of the SLED Forensic DNA Casework Department.

Specific Duties
  • Evaluate case information and appropriately process submitted items for biological and trace evidence using defined protocols. Properly label all evidence for identification and properly document all observations and presumptive testing results on case worksheets.
  • Maintain complete and proper chain of custody of all evidence taken into employee's custody. Verify inventory of containers. Maintain evidence in such a manner as to ensure optimal evidence recovery and prevention of cross-contamination.
  • Properly package all samples collected as potential evidence and transfer them to the appropriate departments for further testing. Properly package evidence for return to submitting agencies.
  • When necessary, coordinate with other departments to ensure that all requested analysis is appropriately prioritized and evidence is preserved to the extent possible.
  • Properly document all case-related communications with other parties. Maintain a professional level of communication at all times.
  • Utilize all necessary software and hardware, such as the Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) system or photography equipment to properly document all case-related information. Retrieve case-related information from the LIMS.
  • Provide expert testimony in a court of law as it pertains to involvement in case.
  • Under general supervision, perform various duties including, but not limited to solution preparation, calibration, quality control, safety functions, or inventories associated with the operation of the DNA Casework Department.
  • Provide or participate in designated training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the departmental supervisor.

  • A minimum of a BA/BS degree or equivalent in a biological, chemical, or forensic science along with a basic knowledge of laboratory procedures and a working knowledge of computerized information systems.
  • Must have a basic understanding of science and scientific principles sufficient to function in a laboratory setting.
  • Must have knowledge of precautions required for handling biohazardous materials. Employee must desire to examine biohazardous evidence with the purpose of sample collection for further forensic analysis.
  • Must have effective communication skills and a basic understanding of computers is required.
  • Must have effective writing skills for the description of evidence on worksheets.
  • Must be able to obtain competency and maintain proficiency in the appropriate categories of testing.
  • Overnight travel for training or court may be required. Some lifting of evidence up to approximately 20 pounds may be required.
