Provides faculty development support, consulting on and supporting programs that advance effective and inclusive pedagogy, assessment, and/or course design, and assisting with strategies for student success.
The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) is the nucleus of a university culture that values teaching and learning. We support, promote, and enhance inclusive teaching and effective pedagogical practice to positively impact student learning and success. CTL staff foster dialogue, scholarship, innovation, and excellence in learner-centered teaching, and promote inclusive teaching and scholarship that mutually enhance one another for the benefit of students, faculty, and the community. The CTL reports to the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Studies in the Provost’s Office.
Competent and productive professional contributor who applies acquired job skills, policies, and procedures to complete substantive assignments/projects/tasks of moderate scope and complexity. Works independently with general supervision; exercises judgment within defined guidelines and practices to determine appropriate action. Works collaboratively with other staff both in the unit and across campus.
The Specialist will focus 70% of their time to:
- Collaborate with Associate Director, CTL staff, and relevant staff in other University units to develop and implement of programs in support of, but not limited to, these areas of expertise:
- open educational resources (OER)
- new faculty mentoring and support
- the scholarship of teaching and learning
- universal design for learning (UDL)
- digital accessibility
- Programs the specialist may support include, but are not limited to:
- New Faculty Orientation and new faculty onboarding
- New Faculty First Fridays
- Interdisciplinary Mentoring Program for new faculty
- Faculty learning communities related to student success, UDL, or OER
The Specialist will focus 25% of their time to:
- Consult with individual instructors to analyze needs and determine goals for support of their development as effective teachers. These might include, but are not limited to:
- Applying evidence-based instructional practices to advance equity in student success
- Assisting faculty in adopting inclusive practices (e.g., UDL, transparent assignments)
- Thoughtfully integrating pedagogy with enterprise and emerging technologies 2
- Design and facilitate pedagogy workshops for educators (in person, remotely, and online).
- In consultation with the Associate Director, assist with support for campus initiatives in which the CTL is a partner.
- Engage with current trends and technologies in the field of higher education through participation in conferences, professional organizations and/or professional development opportunities, as well as reviewing relevant literature.
- Contribute to CTL communication to university and external audiences, including, but not limited to, various reports and blog posts.
The Specialist will focus 5% of their time to:
- Perform other duties as assigned
- Experience with and knowledge of effective and diverse teaching strategies
- Experience with tools or strategies in a particular area of teaching (e.g., teaching with technology, active learning, etc.)
- Basic understanding of the tenets of inclusive and equitable teaching
- Ability to draw from the literature around effective teaching and faculty development to inform work
- Ability to be both a collaborative, inclusive team member and to work independently
- Strong verbal, written and visual communication skills
- Moderate digital fluency in desktop computing and mobile devices, with a preference for at least basic skills in multimedia production (e.g., graphic design, captioning video, digital storytelling)
- Effective facilitation and consultation skills
- Bachelor’s Degree
- Two years of relevant experience in an educational setting (e.g., thoughtful teacher, professional development in any field, training as an educator, work in a teaching center, writing center, learning assistant, any work that relates to teaching and learning)
Preferred Qualifications:
- Advanced Degree and or Certificate
- Ability to facilitate professional development in various formats for professional audiences, including facilitating in-person and virtual events
- Ability to build and manage constructive relationships with educators, instructional staff, and other campus partners
- Experience teaching in higher education settings
- Experience using assistive technologies
- Experience using educational technologies
- Experience with implementing and supporting the use of Universal Design for Learning practices
- Demonstrated commitment to and experience working with diverse educators and students
The minimum starting salary for this position is $50,502.40, rising to $57,678.40 commensurate with experience.
