The STDM position has the responsibility to help position and promote currently labeled products, products currently in the development phase, and newly licensed or acquired products. This position has a dual role of field science and technical sales support responsibility.
The STDM will drive the development strategy for Gowan SeedTech’s product offerings. He or she will work with the GST General Manager to define a portfolio of best-in-class offerings for seed treatments, develop such offerings (via Gowan’s own crop protection portfolio or through licensed products) for the market. The development process includes coordination with Gowan’s regulatory, formulations, and other teams, owning the result from inception to launch.
The STDM will work in conjunction with Gowan Field Development Representatives to help conduct and/ or coordinate field research with Gowan products. This position interacts heavily with commercial teams to provide technical support both internally and externally (i.e., distribution, retail, consultants, university personnel and key Centers of Influence in the assigned territory).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in Plant Science, Weed Science, Entomology, Plant Pathology or Agronomy with 3-5 years field experience in development of plant protection products.
Ideal Candidate:
- An advanced degree in science and will have 3-5 years of field experience in evaluation of compounds and cropping systems, primarily in the US geography.
- Extensive experience with pulse and small-seeded vegetable crops (carrot, leafy green, onion, brassica, cucurbit, etc.) is preferred.
- A thorough understanding of the US crop protection industry.
- Experience in project management, planning, designing, implementing and evaluating trials related to plant protection compounds using standard field research techniques (including use of ARM).
- Exhibit strong inter-personal skills and be equally skilled at communicating with fellow researchers at the university or private level as well as marketing and sales people and customers.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with experience in translating detailed scientific information into practical decision-ready information for non-technical clients.
- Self-starter able to take initiative and conduct themselves in a professional manner with little direct supervision.
Examples of Specific Duties:
- Seed Technology Development duties will include the following:
- Work to develop and refresh a suite of seed treatment products to be sold by GST in the market.
- Project manage the development of new or different offerings by interfacing with different functions in the Gowan Group (regulatory, formulation, commercial, etc.).
- Serve as a liaison between customers and development to promote, protect and identify product opportunities for the Gowan SeedTech portfolio of products.
- Develop annual trial protocols, secure seed for trials, treat seed for trials and arrange for third party treatment of pelleted trials.
- Report results to third party chemical owners.
- Submit trial results in a timely fashion and upon request.
- Work with large growers, consultants and key COI’s to promote and position Gowan products through on farm demonstrations.
- Assist in obtaining Experimental Use Permits, special use registrations and tracking regulatory information as required by regulatory authorities.
- Serve as a key technical resource for the assigned territory.
- Develop training materials on Gowan products and provide technical product training to Sales Representatives in the assigned territory.
- Conduct demonstration trials for sales representatives and customers.
- Assist in the assessment of product performance issues.
- Assist Sales in by providing information for developing presentations and, when needed, presenting technical features at customer/industry meetings.
- Work with Communications and Marketing groups to create technical AND information bulletins, advertisements and product promotion tools.
- Generate and monitor annual budget for research needs.
- Determine needs and equipment required to set up seed treatment lab in Yuma.
