Job description
The CNC Machine Programmer is responsible for standardizing CNC Machining systems. Create programming, setup sheets, tooling, and fixturing.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Program CNC lathe and CNC milling machine to perform turning, boring, facing, counterboring, grooving, drilling, tapping, and milling.
- When necessary, perform all setups on machines and recommend and advise type of tooling needed to perform machining operations.
- Setups are exacting and sometimes difficult, requiring the use of special fixtures and other improvised methods for holding and aligning work to avoid distortion of parts.
- Interpret drawings and plan work in proper operational sequence. Work from drawings with very little help from Team Leader.
- Lay out work as necessary to establish locations of holes, surfaces, and other reference points.
- Check feeds and speeds necessary to machine parts, maintain constant check to ensure adherence to close tolerance and co-related dimensions on shoulders, diameters, bore faces, slot grooves and high degree of squareness, concentricity and parallelism. Perform first-piece inspection.
- Keep work area orderly and observe prescribed safety rules at all times.
Work Environment: Work-related hazards include moving heavy motors, using high voltage, and working with chemicals.
Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and ability to adjust focus.

- Advanced mathematics is required; use of complicated drawings, specifications, charts, tables, and related.
- Ability to use inspection tools and gauges with little or no supervision.
- Ability to make correct decisions as to fits, finishes, machining sequences essential to the production of workable parts.
- Requires the use of judgment to plan, perform, and make decisions as to the sequence of setups, operations, and processes within the limitations of recognized or standard methods.
- Critical thinking and complex problem-solving skills to identify alternative and correct solutions.
- Concentrated mental and visual attention in laying out or otherwise performing complex work to very close limits of high accuracy and quality.
- Must be self-motivated and self-directed.
- Associate’s degree or diploma in Machine Technology or equivalent experience is required.
- Minimum of three years of progressively difficult machinist experience is required.
