Summary

The person in this position provides leadership for the retention programs offered by the Office of Multicultural Affairs. Additionally, this position will develop and oversee cultural competency and other inclusion education workshops and programming for the campus community. The programs and services supervised, coordinated, and implemented by the individual are critical for the retention of diverse student populations by addressing the cultural competency of staff and providing cultural programming to facilitate creating an inclusive campus environment that positively impacts all students, faculty, and staff in the BGSU community.

Essential Functions

Retention Programming
  • Provide leadership and oversight for retention initiatives offered by OMA (including but not limited to MSL, FSI, etc.)
  • Develop the curriculum for, coordinate all aspects of, and lead the Multicultural Student Link, including the summer bridge program and UNIV 1510. This includes: training and supervising MSL team leaders, teaching UNIV 1510 and serving as course coordinator for multiple sections, working closely with 1910 developers on Life Design components of retention initiatives.
  • Develop assessment instruments and evaluations for programs and services for reports and maintain data for programs
  • Advise diverse students participating in OMA retention programs of the office and assist them with implementing academic success strategies, overcoming transitional issues, social integration, challenges with identity and the intersectionality of identities, financial aid awareness, etc. Provide holistic/intrusive advising on a walk-in basis and through caseload assignment for at-risk and diverse students
  • Represent the office on retention related committees, including Strong Start to Finish, initiatives from Academic Affairs, etc.

Programming and Training

  • Oversee the development and implementation of inclusion education programs for students, faculty, staff, and the community, including but not limited to the facilitation of Implicit Bias, Safe Zone, and other diversity education workshops. Update and revise Diversity Education curriculum and materials as needed.
  • Lead and facilitate education programs and workshops, particularly for student group and organizations
  • Assist with the development and implementation of Cultural Heritage and History Months – in collaboration with other OMA staff and campus partners
  • Participate on University committees related to staff/employee cultural competency development
  • Develop and implement partnership to support international students and international programs

Supervision

  • Provide leadership and guidance to graduate student. Complete evaluations and assess progress related to Program Competencies.
  • Multicultural Advising, Recruitment and Retention Support
  • Act as advisor or liaison for multicultural student organizations. Serve as the advisor or department liaison for BSU, LSU, or other marginalized student organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor and as identified as needs of the office

Minimum Qualifications

The following Education is required:

  • Master's Degree. Degree must be conferred at the time of application
    • Master's Degree in College Student Personnel, Counseling, Sociology, Business Psychology, or related field preferred

The following Experience is required:

  • 2 years of experience developing, implementing, supervising, and coordinating diversity education programs
  • 2 years of experience supporting diverse student populations

  • Possess strategic planning, management and a commitment to continuous improvement
  • Knowledge of diversity, equity, inclusion, cultural competency research best practices, strategies, and theories for diverse groups and staff development
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to keep complete, detailed, and accurate records; ability to gather and analyze data and to draw relevant conclusions from the data
  • Word processing and computer proficiency
