The Role

We are looking for a motivated Research Scientist proficient in modeling atmosphere and/or ocean dynamics, with a particular interest in air-sea interactions, to join our team of experts working at the intersection of research and industry. You will join a group of motivated scientists in the science team, and together with the support of experienced software engineers, advance Sofar’s forecasting capabilities based on Sofar’s unique global observations. Together with the team you will develop a coupled ocean-wave-atmosphere forecasting system that uses state-of-the-art modeling components and new advances in coupled data assimilation.

This position will support a combination of fundamental research, research-to-operations transition, and review and evaluation of operational forecasting performance, in an iterative feedback loop. You will be expected to make pragmatic decisions that help drive advances in Sofar’s forecasting capabilities, and at the same help drive advances in science and integrating across the broader scientific community. Sofar has a strong track record in publishing in peer-reviewed publications, collaborating grants across government and academia, and presence at relevant scientific conferences, and as a team member you will be expected to contribute to all of these efforts.

Minimum experience required:

  • Graduate degree in a relevant field, such as atmospheric and oceanic sciences, applied mathematics, computer/computational science, engineering.
  • Knowledge of numerical modeling for geophysical fluid dynamics applications, such as the atmosphere or ocean.
  • Knowledge of software development, including Fortran and Python, and code management software such as Git/Github.
  • Experience working with either traditional or cloud based high performance computing.

Bonus points:

  • Expert knowledge of air-sea interactions and air-sea modeling
  • Experience developing and testing modifications to realistic large-scale global models such as FV3-GFS, WaveWatchIII, or MOM6
  • Experience working with the Earth System Modeling Framework (ESMF) and National Unified Prediction Capability (NUOPC)
  • Experience working with the Community Mediator for Earth Prediction Systems (CMEPS) and Community Data Models for Earth Predictive Systems (CDEPS)
  • Experience using cloud services (AWS, Azure etc.).

Estimated Salary Range

  • $135,000-$160,000
  • The range listed is what we reasonably expect to pay for this role at the time of this posting. We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and may be modified in the future. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, experience, and equity package.
